Smithing is one of the most rewarding skills in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), it allows you to craft powerful armor, weapons, and items. However, leveling up Smithing skill can be a tough and slow grind, that’s where temporary skill boosts play their part to save the day. To meet a quest requirement or if you want to make higher-level gear, this OSRS Smithing boost guide tells everything you need to know including the best way to do it.
How to Boost Smithing in OSRS
There are many ways to temporarily increase your Smithing level. Some boosts offer a small but solid increase, while others give you a big jump but with an element of chance.
One of the easy-to-obtain Smithing boosts is the Dwarven Stout, which provides a +1 boost to both Smithing and Mining. The stout can be found anywhere on the map usually in Inns. With a little higher increase, the Dwarven Stout (m) gives a +2 boost that you can buy from the Grand Exchange. These options are good for getting minor level increases, but for a stronger boost, you will have to look elsewhere.
Spicy Stew with 3 orange spice can provide up to a +6 Smithing boost, but the RNG plays its part here with a boost level between -5 and +5 on each try. Since the gain lowers the Smithing level, you may need to drink multiple stews before getting the effect you are after. To make this work, complete Evil Dave’s portion of the Recipe for Disaster quest and collect orange spice from Hell Rats.
Spicy Stew can increase or decrease your Smithing level by up to 5 levels. To maximize your chances, use four doses of orange spice for the high potential boost. By activating the Preserve Prayer, the drains become 50% slower than usual thus increasing the boost’s time. You need to drink many stews to obtain what you want.
Another great choice is Kovac’s Grog with a guaranteed +4 Smithing boost. You can get the drink from the Giants’ Foundry minigame and is mainly useful for a consistent, hassle-free boost. With enough spare money to invest, you can also buy Kovac’s Grog from Grand Exchange at a higher cost. Since it lasts for 60 seconds, it’s best to plan your actions in advance to make the most of the effect.
If you want long-term benefits rather than a direct Smithing boost, consider using Goldsmith Gauntlets. These gloves don’t provide a level increase, but they heavily level up the XP gain by smelting gold bars at Blast Furnace. You receive 60 experience points for one gold bar, so it’s a great choice to move towards the level 99 Smithing.
Players with level 60 Mining can enter the Mining Guild, which provides a Mining boost. Although it doesn’t boost the skill, quick mining ores yields more materials to use in the boost.
