When carving up massive monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds at High Rank, you will come across a blacksmith who tells you that you need a Speartuna Fin for a weapon. A fish fin? Yes, really. It’s a massive swordfish-looking creature that will test your patience and fishing skills in unexpected ways. But if you want the Frozen Speartuna, an absurdly cool ice-element Great Sword, you have to become a fishing master.
Unfortunately, catching this material isn’t as simple as casting your line and waiting for a bite. Speartuna is a rare spawn, only appears in a specific season, and fights back with its full power. But don’t worry, we’ve got all the details you need to find and get Speartuna Fin in MH Wilds to perform weapon upgrades.
Monster Hunter Wilds Speartuna Fin Location
Speartuna only spawns in one location: Area 17 of the Scarlet Forest. This area, located at the highest point on the map, has a large lake reservoir where you’ll be doing all your fishing. But Speartuna only appears during the Fallow season. So if you’re in any other season, you won’t find a single one no matter how long you wait.
Thankfully, changing the season is easy. Simply head to your tent and rest until Fallow season is active. Once the conditions are right, make your way to Great Lake Shore Campsite, the nearest camp to the fishing spot. It’s the best place to reset if things aren’t going your way—which probably won’t at first. At the lake, you might not see a Speartuna right away. Sometimes, it takes a while for the water to populate with fish. Keep an eye out for feeding frenzies—small fish splashing around can sometimes result in a Speartuna spawn. If you don’t see one after some time, head back to camp, rest, and try again.
How to Catch Speartuna in MH Wilds
Unlike regular fish, Speartuna is classified as a “Whopper”, meaning it actively fights against being caught. Speartuna is attracted to the Tuff Joint Bait, which you can only get after completing the fourth fishing quest from Kanya, called “The Catch of a Lifetime!“. If you haven’t done her previous fishing quests yet, go knock them out. Without this bait, you’re going to be casting your line for hours, hoping Speartuna finally decides to take a bite.
When you spot the fish, cast your line and hope for the best—but don’t expect it to bite right away. Even with the right bait, it can get rid of your lure entirely. If this happens, don’t give up. Reel in your line and cast again. And again and again. Once a Speartuna finally catches up in the fishing rod, Whoppers trigger a mini-game where you have to carefully manage your fishing line’s tension. Here’s how it works:
- Move your left analog stick in the fish’s swimming direction to prevent snapping the line.
- If the fish leaps out of the water, quickly press RT while moving the stick in the same direction to keep it under control.
- If you feel your controller vibrate violently, you messed up, and the fish is about to escape. Adjust your movements to stop the vibration.
- When the fish tires out, quickly alternate up and down on the stick to reel it in as fast as possible.
Expect to go through multiple rounds of this struggle before finally landing the fish. And yes, you will probably lose a few before you get it right. Speartuna is meant to be a challenge; just reset, try again, and soon enough, you’ll get the fish for Speartuna Fin.
How to Get Speartuna Fin in Monster Hunter Wilds
Every Speartuna drops one Speartuna Fin when caught. To get the Frozen Speartuna Great Sword, you’re going to need several of them.
- 1 Speartuna Fin – Required to craft the base version of the Frozen Speartuna.
- 2 more Fins – Needed for the first upgrade.
- 3 additional Fins – Required for the final upgrade.
So, you’ll have to go through this process at least five or six times. The Frozen Speartuna is pretty strong – it deals ice damage, making it very effective against fire-based monsters, and it swings like a proper Great Sword. That’s what you need where half the fun of Monster Hunter is using ridiculous weapons to beat up terrifying monsters.
