The Axe from the Lake is one of the side quests in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 which offers you a chance to find a legendary silver axe with some backstory. In this guide, we’ll walk you through steps to complete The Axe from the Lake quest in KCD 2 including how to find the quest giver, axe location, and reforging it in the end.
How to Start The Axe from the Lake in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
To kick off The Axe from the Lake quest, you’ll need to head to Tachov, a settlement in the Trosky region. Once there, search for a local loudmouth named Zdenyek the Mouth and talk to her. You can find him usually hanging around the Tachov Tavern. He is a little bit storyteller and will only spill his secrets under the right conditions, so you’ll have to either:
- Buy him a drink (the easiest option).
- Bribe him with 25 Groschen.
- Use Persuasion (if your speech skill is high enough).
Once Zdenyek is properly “persuaded,” he will agree to tell you a story about two brothers, Kuba and Matthias, and a mystical silver axe that was gifted by a water goblin—but not without consequences. Kuba’s greed led him to his demise and he claims that the axe was buried along with Kuba’s body somewhere near Rocktower Pond. Now you know where to look, your task is to go there and dig up the grave to get the silver axe.
Where to Find the Silver Axe from the Lake in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Before you rush off to dig up ancient relics, make sure you have a spade in your inventory as it is required to do that. If you don’t already have one, you can buy one from Merchant Jurg Thomel in Troskowitz for a few Groschen. Otherwise, in the practice of saving your precious money, steal it from anywhere you can (though getting caught will lower your reputation) or there is a spade available near Zhelejov at dirt mounds outside buildings.
Once equipped with a spade, head west of Zhelejov towards Rocktower Pond. Your map will highlight a large search area, but the actual axe location of the axe is specific. To find the grave, start at the pier on the northern side of the pond. Follow the path to the right uphill until you come across a large oak tree.
Get past the tree from the left and follow the path for a while to find a big rock—this is where Matthias supposedly tried to destroy the cursed axe. Go straight from the right side of the boulder until you reach a clearing with a tree overlooking the valley. You’ll see a disturbed patch of dirt near the tree, this is Kuba’s grave.
Once you’ve found the grave, use your spade to dig it up. Inside, you’ll find the Broken Axe, a gemstone silver ring that can be sold for extra cash, and some other loot items. So, all that’s left is to restore the axe to its former glory to finish the quest.
How to Repair the Broken Axe
To fix the broken axe, you’ll need a blacksmithing station, and the best place to go is Radovan, the Blacksmith in Tachov. I’m sure you already know him at this stage because he is one of the first NPCs you encounter at the game’s start as you need his help to find a way into Sir Hans’s wedding. You can go to him or fast travel for anything related to forging weapons or gear. To forge the axe, you’ll need one Fastening Material which can be bought from Radovan for around 2 Groschen with good haggle.
Using Radovan’s blacksmithing equipment:
- Heat the axe head in the forge until it glows yellow/orange fully hot.
- Hammer it on both sides to reshape it.
- Sharpen it at a grindstone for maximum damage.
Once finished, you now have the Adorned Axe, a fully restored version of the legendary silver weapon. While the Adorned Axe isn’t the most overpowered weapon in Kingdom Come 2, it’s still a solid early-game axe with respectable stats:
- 91.2 slash damage
- 45.6 blunt damage
- 104 defense
- +5 Charisma bonus
- Sell value: 699.5 Groschen
With your reforged axe in hand, return to Zdenyek in Tachov. Tell him about your discovery, and he will be shocked that the axe actually exists—since he thought the whole story was just a myth. With that, The Axe from the Lake quest will be completed, and you can now progress to the next quest with the Adorned Axe in your inventory.
