Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Hermit Quest: Where to Find the Hermit’s Grave and Sword

Hermit's sword is your main goal but should you kill him or not?

Right after starting your journey in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, you have a task on hand to find a way into the wedding. One of these marriage entry sources is to go to Tachov to take on the blacksmith Radovan’s questline. In this quest, you will encounter another figure Hermit, an old knight, and have to retrieve his special sword. The quest involves gathering information, locating a hidden grave, and making a tough decision about the fate of Konrad.

In this complete Hermit quest walkthrough in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, we’ll break down everything you need to know from finding the Hermit to claiming the sword. Before going for it, it’s better to first get a free Dogwood Village Bow to start your journey.

How to Start the Hermit Quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

The Hermit quest is a part of the main Radovan storyline that you need to complete to progress the blacksmith’s story. After dealing with the bandits and helping Radovan to get back his cart, you will successfully get yourself a place in his heart. He reveals his plan to forge a sword as a wedding gift for Semine. However, he needs a special blade once owned by a former knight-turned-hermit.

Before you can find the Hermit, you’ll need to gather some information from the locals in Troskowitz.

Get Intel About the Hermit

The first stop on your investigation is Troskowitz, where the locals have seen some strange happenings. Head to the tavern and speak with Innkeeper Betty. She has the scoop on the Hermit but won’t spill everything right away. Make sure you exhaust all dialogue options with Betty—if you don’t, you miss some important quest markers to progress further.

Talk to Gerda and Stanislav

Once you’ve spoken to Betty, next go chat with the villagers. You can approach a few different NPCs, but the most important ones are Gerda and Stanislav. Gerda is the wife of the local apothecary, and she claims to have seen a ghostly figure near the Consiliatory Cross outside the village. You can either bribe her with Groschen or try with your dialogues to get her to talk. She will tell you about a dark-cloaked specter moving across the area at night.

After getting the necessary intel from Gerda, go talk to Stanislav. He is a shepherd who has also spotted this mysterious figure. His account is similar, but he adds an interesting detail—the figure seemed lost or confused while walking along the road. Again, you’ll need to either persuade him or pay him off to get this information.

Investigate the Cross

With information from these NPCs, you now need to get some hard evidence to confirm the case. First, you have to arrange a spade/shovel because there is a ground-digging process ahead. If you don’t have one, you can buy a spade from the trader in Troskowitz or steal one from a local cemetery.

Your first destination is the Consiliatory Cross, located west of Troskowitz. This is the spot Gerda mentioned when she talked about seeing a ghostly figure. When you arrive, you’ll find a mound of disturbed earth at the base of the cross. At digging, some wolves may attack out of nowhere so be aware and kill them if they come. Dig up the soil, and you will find:

  • A bag of Groschen
  • Documents referencing the Knights of the Cross
  • A black robe, matching the villagers’ description

The documents hint at a group of knights operating in the area, possibly connected to the Hermit, this already hints that there’s more to the story than just a wandering ghost.

Explore Apollonia and Find the Black Horse

Find the Black Horse in Apollonia during Hermit quest

The next clue takes you east of Troskowitz, from Stanislav’s usual spot. As you travel toward Apollonia, keep an eye out for a black horse hidden in the brush on the right end of the road. This is the same horse the apparition was seen with, which pretty much confirms that Henry is dealing with a real person—not some supernatural entity.

At this point, you’ve gathered enough evidence to confront the Hermit. With the robe, documents, and horse all pointing to a more grounded explanation, it’s time to track him down and get some answers.

Find and Talk to Hermit

The Hermit’s hut is north of Apollonia, up in the mountains. Finding it can be tricky since the map only shows typical quest marker for the area. Look for a white trail leading up a mountainside—this is the only way in. Follow this path, and you’ll come across the Hermit’s small, secluded dwelling.

On arriving, you will see the Hermit sitting by the fire or resting inside the hut. If you try to speak with him without presenting evidence, he will simply brush you off and refuse to talk. But since you’ve done your homework, you can now press him for answers.

During your conversation, choose the dialogue option, “You’re suspicious.” to get him to open up. Go through all the clues and evidence you’ve collected in dialogues and force him to open his mouth.

After such pressure, the Hermit finally confesses—he is not Ambrose, but a man named Konrad. He used to be a knight but is now on the run, hiding from the past. However, he won’t just hand over the sword yet. Instead, he asks you to deliver a silver cross to a widow named Margaret and fulfill a dying man’s last wish. If you agree, he’ll tell you the location of the sword after completing this task.

Deliver the Cross to Widow Margaret

Visit the cemetery near Apollonia, where you’ll find Margaret. If she’s not at the cemetery, you might also find her wandering around the village or at the tavern in the evening.

When you approach her, tell her that you have something from Konrad, Ambrose’s brother. As soon as you show her the silver cross, she instantly recognizes it and becomes emotional. She reveals that Ambrose, the real Hermit, was her late lover, and she had always wanted to give him a proper burial.

At this point, you get the option to help her bury Ambrose’s remains. To do this, you need a spade (which you should already have by now) or you can borrow again from the graveyard. Follow these steps:

  1. Dig up Ambrose’s grave
  2. Rebury the remains in the cemetery.
  3. Say a prayer over the grave to bring closure.

If you go through with this, Margaret will be grateful and reward you with a small sum of Groschen. While this step is optional, there is no offense to doing a good deed for a poor widow and building a good reputation. After that, return to Konrad for the final confrontation.

Should You Kill or Save the Hermit (Konrad) in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2?

Should You Kill or Save the Hermit (Konrad) in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

On your return to Hermit’s hut, you’ll notice that things have turned wild and I should recommend saving the game before going to Konard settlement. A group of Crusaders, members of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star, has surrounded the area. Their leader, Brother Arn, stops you and demands to speak.

According to him, Konrad isn’t an innocent man in hiding but a wanted traitor. The Crusaders claim that Konrad was hired by the Inquisition to assassinate their leader grand master Zdenyek, but he failed and cleared the way to escape by killing several knights in the process. Now, they’ve come to capture (or kill) him.

At this point, you have three options:

Help the Crusaders Kill Hermit

If you side with the Crusaders, they will storm the hut and fight Konrad for you. This is by far the easiest option since you can just watch them do the work. Once Konrad is dead, you can loot his body for the documents he carries. Brother Arn will reward you with Groschen for helping them bring justice.

Help Konrad Escape

If you sneak past the Crusaders and talk to Konrad, you can warn him and try to help him escape. Konrad insists that he’s being framed and claims to have proof of the grandmaster’s treachery. However, he never actually shows this proof, leaving some doubt about his true intentions. During the conversation, ask about the sword for which, he tells you the real Hermit’s grave location towards the north of the hut with two entangled oak trees on the spot.

If you choose to fight the Crusaders alongside Konrad, be warned—it’s a very tough battle. The knights are well-trained and well-armed, and even if you manage to win, Konrad might turn on you afterward. There is a situation where he attacks you immediately after the fight, which could be a glitch/bug or a hint that he was using you all along.

I killed Konrad right away to save big trouble of fighting the knights’ group because he will attack you anyway once the dust settles and you have to kill him later on. I took the documents from his body and offered them to the Crusaders to move on from this tense situation.

How to Find the Hermit’s Sword in KCD 2

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Hermit Sword map location

The grave you’re looking for is north of the Hermit’s hut, beneath two entangled oak trees. If you open your map, you’ll see a quest marker in a green circular area—head toward the top edge of this marker, and you’ll find the gravesite.

As you approach, look for a mound of dirt with a sword sticking out of it. This is Ambrose’s final resting place, and his sword has been left behind, buried alongside him. Dig up the grave, and you’ll uncover Ambrose’s skeleton, but the real treasure here is the Damascus steel sword embedded in the ground. Pick it up, and your task here is done.

To make it clear, you can come to the grave and get the Hermit sword right from the game’s start without going through the long quest. However, doing so skips a lot of the story and rewards, so it’s worth going through the full quest line at least once. With the sword in hand, it’s time to take it back to Radovan and forge it into a true masterpiece for the wedding gift.

The blacksmith will ask you to forge the weapon yourself. To do it, use the hammer to shape the blade properly. Each strike should be next to the previous one for a right finish. No matter how well you do, the sword will be Tier 3, as it seems to be fixed in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. However, if you completely botch the forging, you’ll have to redo it. After presenting the new blade to Radovan, he will be impressed and bring you along to the wedding.

That’s how you find the Hermit’s grave, retrieve the sword, and complete The Hermit quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Further, you can earn great money by selling stolen horses and find the rare Herb Paris to make potions or poison your enemies.
