The King’s Gambit is the main quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 filled with political intrigue, deception, and espionage rather than straightforward combat. It takes place after you save Hans once again as you did by running through the Trosky Castle in For Whom the Bells Tolls quest with the help of Captain Thomas. In The King’s Gambit, Henry needs to infiltrate the City Council of Kuttenberg as a royal waiter. Your task is to gather information about King Sigismund’s plans and influence the noble factions to unite against him.
Other than Henry as usual, you will also briefly play as Father Godwin, an important figure in rallying support against Sigismund. This KCD 2 guide provides a detailed walkthrough to complete The King’s Gambit quest and avoid mistakes that might get you caught or fail the mission.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 The King’s Gambit Quest Walkthrough
The quest automatically becomes available once you complete Taking French Leave and reunite with Hans Capon. After a brief meeting with Hanush of Leipa and Radzig Kobyla, you are assigned to be aggressive and get into Sigismund’s City Council. So, here is our complete walkthrough on how to proceed in this quest to reach the finish line.
Infiltrate the City Council
First, head to Kuttenberg City Hall during the daytime, speak with the guard at the entrance, and select the dialogue option: “I have an appointment” to get entry. Inside, find Ulrich Vavak of Neuhaus by going upstairs as this guy helps with your infiltration. During the conversation, you must convince him to let you take the role of a waiter. These are a few possible options for you to get his help:
- Use intimidation (Dread – Hard check)
- Persuade him (Speech skill check)
- Bribe him for 65 Groschen
No matter what to choose, Vavak will agree to let you replace a royal waiter Franta Kuldaun, who is actually his cook’s son and assigned to serve the King of Hungary. So, now it’s you going as Franta and get intel.
Obtain the Waiter’s Certificate and Clothes
As with the case in high-profile gatherings or places, you need to have a permission letter to go inside the council chamber. So, you require a certificate and special clothes to enter the council by finding Franta, who you can find at the market as he is gone to pick up his clothes from Master Tailor Schneider. Convince him to give you his job by choosing one of the following options:
- Persuade him (Presence 24 skill check).
- Bribe him (Charisma skill check or Groschen payment).
- Steal the certificate and outfit from him by pickpocketing or knocking him out at nighttime.
Once successful, you will receive a Royal waiter’s certificate and Royal waiter’s outfit including the hat, coat, and trousers that you need to wear for now.
Report for Duty
Before moving forward, fully equip the full Royal Waiter’s outfit to look like one of the council waiters and unequip all weapons and armor. Find Majordomo (the Scribe) in the northwest of the Kuttenberg market and speak with him.
Show your certificate for entry and when talking to him, select these dialogues to proceed:
- “I’m the new royal waiter.”
- Choose any reasonable excuse for Franta’s absence from the five given options – better to pick “He’s drunk.”
- “I’ll be happy to learn”
- “Stay in the background”
- “I understand everything”
- “I know what I need (Wait for the City Council to convene)”
Serve the Councilors
In the council chamber, your main task is to serve wine correctly while avoiding suspicion. Firstly, never serve wine to Adam of Zarzitz and refuse him politely if he asks for a drink. When someone asks for Tokaji wine, it means white wine that is served from a silver jug. And Monastery wine is the red one in the brown jug. Remember, you have to serve the wine to members as requested and do it quickly otherwise, there will be a game over screen in front of you – you can’t even make a save in this council part.
Complete Special Requests from the Councilors
During the council meeting, you will need to fulfill a few special requests assigned by the members. Bailiff Andreas Plumel will whisper to you about his confiscated silver goblet. Go up the small stairs to a side room and find the goblet on a table; bring it back to him. The other one is Franz Rosenthal who will request you to get his gloves from the chapel.
Go to the adjacent southeast room (a small chapel). Pick up the Lambskin Gloves from the lectern and bring them to him. He will then ask: “How many winged figures are on the murals in the chapel?” The right answer is 24 which earns you extra Groschen.
After a cutscene, King Sigismund of Luxembourg enters the chamber, and you must serve him wine carefully. Pay attention to what Sigismund himself asks for, not what Markvart von Aulitz tells you.
- First request: Monastery wine (Red wine).
- Second request: Monastery wine (Red wine).
- Third request: Tokaji wine (White wine).
This marks the completion of Henry’s part of the quest for here as of now.
Play as Father Godwin and Convince the Nobles
After the council meeting, control shifts to Father Godwin at Raborsch. Here, you have to convince three nobles to join John of Liechtenstein’s alliance against Sigismund. The first one is Haman Alder, you can find him speaking with Ruthard. A family conflict arises in the conversation, and Godwin’s brother, Christopher Oderin, challenges you to a duel. Win or lose, Christopher will still convince Haman to support you.
The second figure to convince is Botschek of Kunstadt, you can meet him in the pub downstairs on the first floor. He wants to arrange a marriage for his niece. You should suggest Sir Hans Capon as the husband candidate, then speak with Hanush in the courtyard. After that, talk back to Botschek to secure his support.
Find the third NPC Anna of Waldstein sitting by a window in the upper ballroom. She needs your help to switch Haman Alder’s documents with fakes. Go to the stables, and swap the documents in the saddlebags without being seen; return to Anna to confirm the task and get his support as well. Once all three nobles are convinced, you can now return back to John of Liechtenstein and repot it to complete this Godwin part.
Serve Sigismund Last Time as Henry
Once you have the support of the nobles and tell John about it, you return to Henry for a final encounter with Sigismund. Follow his drink requests carefully (Monastic = Red, Tokaji = White). Do not look directly at Markvart von Aulitz to avoid being recognized. After serving the wine as requested, Sigismund will then ask you to drink with him. You can respond: “To victory!” Accepting the drink will complete the The King’s Gambit quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
