During the Battle for Castle Kvatch quest in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, there is a bug taking place when Savlian Matius won’t stop saying “Charge the courtyard! Leave none of them standing!” like a broken record. Savlian is supposed to lead you into the castle to continue the battle. But instead of progressing, the guy freezes in place, repeating the same line over and over.
A lot of players in Oblivion Remastered are running into this bug where the quest won’t move forward, even when all the enemies are killed. Thankfully, it’s not impossible to fix it, and there’s a good workaround to get past this stuck situation during the ‘Charge the Courtyard’ bug in Oblivion Remastered.
How to Fix Oblivion Remastered Kvatch “Charge the courtyard” Bug
Ignore Savlian’s endless yelling and head into the Great Hall. You’ll find the entrance right behind him at the back of the courtyard. It’s the door he keeps glancing at while doing his broken-loop speech. Inside, you’ll run into some residents, including Scamps and Flame Atronachs. Keep defeating them when walking through the rooms. The layout is linear, so simply keep moving forward and dispatching enemies as you go.
You’ll reach a grand staircase — head up, keep pushing through the hallways, and don’t miss any corners until you reach a room labeled “Count’s Quarters.” Inside the Quarters, look around for Count Ormellius Goldwine’s corpse, usually lying next to some chairs. Loot his body to get the Colovian Signet Ring.
Head back to the courtyard where Savlian is still stuck in motivational speaker mode. Talk to him, and this time, you should get a dialogue option to inform him that the Count is dead. Once you hand over the ring, he’ll give you the Kvatch Cuirass, a solid armor piece.
More than this, players across the community have figured out and shared a few helpful things beyond the main solution such as:
- If Savlian still bugs out even after you bring him the ring, leave Kvatch completely and fast-travel back. Players reported that this nudged the quest to recognize your progress.
- In some cases, talking to Martin (who sometimes relocates to the Kvatch camp after the attack) can move things along. Look for him near the fast travel marker outside the city.
- On PC, you can use the command: set ms49.courtyardkilled to 9. This tells the game that the area is cleared of enemies and forces Savlian to continue the quest. Remember that using commands might disable achievements for that session.
This issue has been haunting Oblivion players since the original game. It’s a scripting problem where the game doesn’t properly register that all courtyard enemies have been defeated. Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, though visually polished, brought along a lot of old bugs with it, so veterans are getting a heavy dose of déjà vu.
