Pokémon Legends: Z-A Adds Battle Royale Ranked Matches – Here’s What You Need to Know

Fight from Rank Z to A, complete missions & earn rewards in new Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is going to include a brand-new real-time battle system, and it’s bringing something even bigger—a ranked Battle Royale mode called the Z-A Royale. It lets you step into Lumiose City at night, where glowing battle zones pop up, and trainers fight their way up the ranks. It’s competitive, intense, and sounds like a blast at first. A gameplay trailer is released today on Nintendo Direct, and it offers a good glimpse into the new battle system that could largely make an impact on eSports players and tournaments.

Gone are the turn-based fights where you only stand there and pick moves. In the Z-A Royale, battles happen in real-time, and positioning matters. By sneaking up on an opponent, you can land a big opening attack. If get caught off guard, then it’s good luck for you. Unlike Pokémon Legends: Arceus, where battles were rare and mostly part of the story, Pokémon Legends: Z-A presents fights as a major event—something people watch and compete in regularly. And that’s where the Z-A Royale comes in.

Here’s how it works:

  • At night, special Battle Zones open up around Lumiose City, including wild Pokémon.
  • Trainers start at Rank Z and must win battles to climb to Rank A.
  • Walk into another trainer’s line of sight, and the battle begins.
  • Use the environment and real-time mechanics to gain an advantage.

In the trailer, we saw a player sneak up on a trainer and fire off Lucario’s Flash Cannon, hitting a Florges for big damage before the battle even started. If this is a feature in all battles, it means strategy and timing will be huge in the Z-A Royale. And it’s not only about random fights, every trainer you defeat increases your rank, pushing you closer to the top.

Winning battles earns you points and helps you move up the ranking system, which ranges from Rank Z to Rank A. But getting to the top isn’t as simple as grinding battles—you’ll need to prove yourself in special Promotion Matches. After reaching the right requirements, you’ll receive a Challenger’s Ticket. This gives you the chance to face a powerful trainer in a Promotion Match. Win to rank up, and by losing, you’ll be stuck battling at your current level a little longer.

The trailer also showed battle missions, such as:

  • Knock opponents out with a Mega-Evolved Pokémon.
  • Land hits with Ice-type moves.

Completing these tasks provides extra rewards, possibly currency or rank points. The biggest mystery? Trainers who reach Rank A get a wish granted. But we don’t have any details about what that means. Could it be a rare Pokémon, a powerful item, or even something connected to the story? It’s unclear, but it’s a big deal if the game is hyping it up this much. Missions will likely play a big role in progression, helping trainers earn points faster and unlock rewards that could make climbing the ranks easier.

What Happens in Lumiose City at Night in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Lumiose City isn’t the same all day long. There’s a clear shift in gameplay between day and night, and it’s not only for atmosphere—it changes what you can do. In the daytime, the city is open for exploration freely. Trainers can catch and train Pokémon in Wild Zones. Focus is on building your team and getting ready for nighttime battles.

Right when the sky turns dark, Battle Zones appear, the Z-A Royale kicks off, and the city shifts into a battling hotspot. Strategy matters—sneak attacks can give you an edge, but strong trainers will be hunting too. This means you’ll need to plan ahead—spend your days training and preparing, then battle hard at night. The cycle keeps the game fresh and adds a layer of strategy beyond just fighting.

Will there be Online PvP in Battle Royale Ranked Matches?

There is one big question: can you battle other players online? When Pokémon Legends: Z-A first teased its Promotion Matches, many players had their minds move towards the thought that online battles were coming. But with the current introduction of the Z-A Royale, it looks like it’s nothing more than a single-player experience.

The reason why there are no online battles is that:

  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus had no online battles, and Z-A follows that trend.
  • Real-time combat is harder to balance in multiplayer play.
  • The game seems focused on a story-driven ranked mode, not PvP.

That doesn’t mean Legends: Z-A won’t have any online features. Trading could still be a thing, and there might be some online connectivity we haven’t seen yet. But for now, competitive Pokémon battles will remain in the main series games. With real-time battles, ranked progression, and a completely new approach to competitive play, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is bringing something fresh to the series.
