One of the first major choices in Assassin’s Creed Shadows comes at the end of “The Tea Ceremony” quest. This moment decides how your assassination of the Golden Teppo will turn, and it all comes down to one decision: should you confront Otama or Wakasa in AC Shadows? While both women seem viable suspects, the wrong choice will make your mission harder. To help you navigate this critical decision, this guide explains what happens when you pick either option and its consequences.
Who Should You Pick: Otama or Wakasa in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?
You should choose Wakasa because she is the real Golden Teppo, and confronting her leads to an easy assassination. If you manage to keep your cover intact during the tea ceremony, Wakasa will invite Naoe to her home, where you can eliminate her.
On the other hand, confronting Otama will not take the things in the right way. She’s not your target, and going after her will only create more problems for you. Sure, you will still eventually get to Wakasa, but you’ll have to go the long way through a guarded fortress. That’s a headache you probably don’t need unless smashing enemies is your hobby. Long story short: if you want the quest to go the simple way, confront Wakasa directly in AC Shadows.
What Happens If You Confront Wakasa?
If you go for Wakasa, that’s the right move. But what happens next depends on how well you handled yourself during the tea ceremony. By keeping your disguise intact throughout the event (by choosing the right responses and playing along with the customs), Wakasa won’t suspect anything. Rather than freaking out or running, she’ll invite you to her home. This is by far the best outcome because:
- At her house, you’ll notice a Golden Teppo (rifle) on the wall.
- Interacting with it triggers a cutscene where Naoe assassinates Wakasa.
- It’s a clean, quick, and drama-free way to get the job done.
Further, you will also unlock a Pirate Flag decoration for your hideout and get the Shinobi’s Fury Tanto, a powerful weapon in AC Shadows to make fights easy.
But if you made mistakes during the tea ceremony, such as saying the wrong things or turning the tea bowl the wrong way, Wakasa won’t fall for your act. Instead of inviting you over, she’ll see through your disguise and leave immediately. At this point, you’re forced into a hard situation. Wakasa will flee to Osaka Castle, where she’s surrounded by high-level guards. You can sneak past the guards, avoid detection, and kill her quietly. Otherwise, directly fight your way through, but it will be difficult.
What Happens If You Confront Otama?
Once you accuse Otama, she instantly panics and runs. You have to chase her down through the streets of Sakai, and it’s not a graceful pursuit. After you assassinate her, you will find a letter on her body, which confirms that Wakasa was the real target, being the true Golden Teppo.
So, you now have to head to Osaka Castle to find Wakasa in the top castle area. Instead of a simple assassination at her home, you’re now forced to clear your way through a castle by killing level six elite guards in your way. Wakasa is a level eight boss, so if you’re under-leveled or not prepared, this fight can be very hard. At the end of the day, you’ll still have to kill Wakasa no matter what, so confronting Otama first only means extra work, unnecessary combat, and a way harder quest.
