Who is Rellana, Twin Moon Knight in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree?

Find out about the tragic tale and fearsome power of Rellana.

Rellana, the Twin Moon Knight is one of the most intriguing and frustrating bosses in the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC you will encounter at Castle Ensis. She is the early major boss which you must fight and defeat to continue your journey towards Scadu Altus. She is kind of a deadly opponent who makes you rethink every life choice you’ve ever made—like why you even entered the Lands of Shadows in the first place. But she’s not only a brutal fight; she’s also one of the most layered characters this expansion has thrown at us.

Who is Rellana in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree?

Rellana was actually a Carian princess by her blood relation, living the good life in royal comfort. But unlike her sister Rennala, who leaned into the whole “Queen of the Carians” gig, Rellana wasn’t after the royal status. It’s the same case as what usually happens in Chinese historical period dramas where one of the siblings will have a deep hunger for the royal power but the other doesn’t care at all. She does what any rebellious princess would do—ditch the throne and run off with a guy named Messmer to the mysterious Land of Shadow. Little did she know, this would set her on a path to becoming one of the most fearsome knights in all of Elden Ring.

A Warrior of Dual Loyalties

Despite packing her bags and saying, “So long, Carians!” Rellana didn’t completely cut ties with her magical roots. Her fighting style is a blend of sorcery and straight-up sword slashing, which, honestly is just her showing off. She wields twin blades, and these bad boys are insanely powerful infused with both Glintstone magic and Flame.

What’s good is how her childhood with Rennala still plays a role in her current life—or, well, death. The two sisters once had a deep connection with the twin moons, seeing them as symbols of their sisterly bond. Fast forward to her boss fight, and Rellana channels that memory into one heck of an attack. And if you manage to beat her, you get to wield that power yourself – a hard-earned souvenir.

So, let’s talk about the main drama script, Rellana’s relationship with Messmer. Messmer’s hinted to be some big-shot, possibly even linked to Radagon (most probably his child) means he has some strong power even though not the strongest god. But Rellana is not just following him because of his strength, she’s is in love with him and head over heels for this character. It’s pretty clear Messmer doesn’t feel the same way but also doesn’t like to throw her away because of her usefulness to him. Yes, another tragic tale of unrequited love in the Shadow Lands just like the story between St. Trina and Miquella.

Even though Messmer’s feelings are more lukewarm than a leftover bowl of soup, Rellana sticks by him. She is so loyal that she becomes the main boss of Castle Ensis (one of the toughest Elden Ring fights), standing guard as if her love for Messmer could actually stop a determined Tarnished like you. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. But you’ve got to admire her dedication, even if it leads to a tragic end.

Rellana, the Twin Moon Knight, is way more than another tough nut to crack in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Her story brings another depth to Elden Ring’s lore, and her journey is one of love, loyalty, and ultimate sacrifice. She’s a reminder that every character in the game has a story—one that’s often full of heartbreak and, of course, really intense boss fights.
